Turning a Hobby into Ways to Make Money
Nation, we talked about changing your life on Monday’s, learning new skills or hobbies for that transformational change and I’m really excited for today’s video. Those of you in the nation know this is one of my favorite topics, taking those hobbies or skills and turning them into ways to make more money.
This right here is the secret to financial freedom. It’s not in how much you make but in being able to turn those things you enjoy doing into a side business, making money from doing what you love. It’s a secret all great entrepreneurs know, something I never believed until it happened for me and something I try share as much as possible.
So today we’re going to be looking at three side hustle ideas you can start right now. I’ll be using some video classes you can use to learn the skills you need and talk about how to turn it into your own side business.
I’ll be using SkillShare which is sponsoring the series to show how easy it can be to do all this. Skillshare is on online video platform that offers classes designed for real life. Classes are anywhere from fifteen minutes to an hour so you can fit them into just about any schedule.
3 Ideas to Start a Side Hustle
Now when I talk about creating a side hustle or home business on the channel, a lot of times I’ll suggest taking what you already do at work and finding a way to freelance that from home.
The problem is, and this is something I hear from a lot of you in the nation, is that maybe you’re not able to turn your 9-to-5 into a side business. Maybe your employer won’t let you moonlight on the side or maybe you’re just in a job where it isn’t possible to do from home.
So the alternative is to learn something new or brush up on those skills from a hobby and turn that into your side hustle.
For that, I want to give you three examples using classes from the Skillshare platform, three side hustle ideas you can start in less than an hour.
The first one here is from the first videos I watched on the platform, becoming an Instagram influencer but this really works for any type of social media influencer.
You don’t have to be Kylie Jenner with 152 million Instagram followers to make a lot of money on social media. I’ve turned just three blogs and this YouTube channel into a six-figure business in less than five years. Even someone with just a few thousand followers can make hundreds of dollars from sponsored posts.
But this is more than just sharing pics of you with your face painted like Hello Kitty. You have to know how to grow your social media following, how to treat it like a business and how to get sponsors.
The Instagram classes were some of the first I looked for on Skillshare, trying to level up my own social media game. I came across this one by Sean Dalton, a top teacher on the platform and a lifestyle photographer with over 60,000 Instagram followers, so he knows what he’s talking about. In the class, Sean talks everything from the basics of the platform to working with brands.
How many stories do you need to hear about eight-year olds making $26 million a year or gamers making millions just…well playing video games? Get into the 21st century, start growing a social media business and start making money!
The next side hustle here is something we’ve talked about on the channel before, creating your own neighborhood meal service, but I always get the same response.
I can’t do that because I don’t know how to cook.
So what we’re talking about here is a meal service business and it’s not as complicated as it seems. The average family spends over three thousand a year eating out and some groups like my own Gen X spend over four grand a year.
That’s over $350 a month eating out and doesn’t include the thousand or so a month on groceries. I actually think people would spend more eating out if it wasn’t so expensive…and that’s where you come in, offering home cooking at half the cost of a restaurant.
This doesn’t have to be a big business. If you cook just three meals a week and have on average three customer families each meal, you’re making $200 to $300 profit each week. It costs less than $5 a plate to cook at home and meal delivery businesses typically charge at least $10 to $15 per serving with delivery. That’s a 200% profit on your costs and there are a few things you can do to make this an even bigger money-maker.
To get started, check out some of the cooking classes on Skillshare, some great options here from 10 minute quick recipes all the way to hour-long classes like this one by Luca La Rosa on cooking Italian food.
Another side hustle we’ve talked about on the channel is self-publishing and while I love self-publishing non-fiction books, I’ve never tried doing a fiction novel.
I’ve made just over $81,000 in about five years self-publishing and it’s one of the best passive income sources you can set up. I’ve written 12 books but they’re all in that non-fiction, how-to theme and I know I need to work on my story-telling skills.
That’s why this class on Storytelling 101 by New York Times best-selling author Daniel Jose Older jumped out at me. He breaks down the four C’s of storytelling, diving into narrative and making your story emotionally captivating.
Everyone has a book idea, and this is the best source of passive income I’ve ever found. Like many people, don’t give up on your self-publishing idea mid-way through. I’ll show you how to make it a reality and every trick I use to make monthly money! Self-publishing is extremely easy and everyone has a book idea in them. We’ve got a couple of videos on developing your idea, making writing easy and marketing your book on the channel. Even if you don’t use the storytelling class to publish that book you’ve always wanted to write…you know the one I’m talking about, even if you don’t though, it’s still going to make you a more interesting person through the stories you tell.
The idea here isn’t so much to rush out and start one of these three side hustles but to give you ideas on how to transform that new skill, your new knowledge into a home business.
