Square Pegs: 10 Amazing Actors Who Didn’t Fit In Their Leading Role

Have you ever watched a movie and thought, “Whoah, this actor doesn’t seem like a good fit!” Well, turns out there are lots of movies where Redditors think that lead actors, no matter how talented, were the wrong fit to cast!

Do you remember some other movies where you think this is the case? Let us know if they’re here!

1. Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar

One person stated, “I just re-watched Interstellar last night, and it was just as good, if not better, than I remembered. As remarkable as that movie is (and let’s not ignore the epic soundtrack!) I can’t shake the feeling that Matthew McConaughey was not suited for this role. To be clear, I’ve seen him absolutely kill other starring roles, namely, HBO’s True Detectives. I was completely enamored by his performance in that series; and I’m not typically a fan of crime dramas!”

2. Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia

“The obvious bad fit I can think of is Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia. Seriously, what were they thinking?” someone commented.

3. Tom Hanks in Elvis

Someone shared, “Tom Hanks in Elvis. Seems like an obvious answer but he was terrible.” Tom Hanks played Colonel Tom Parker, a music entrepreneur and a manager to Elvis where he was portrayed as an unapologetic and unprincipled opportunist.

4. Jake Gyllenhaal in Spiderman: Far from Home

Despite how many people view Jake’s role as a compelling and complex villain, and how he actually nailed the role, some Redditors say otherwise.

“I’m definitely in the minority but I thought Jake Gyllenhaal was a terrible fit for Mysterio in Spiderman: Far from Home. Could never take him seriously,” someone stated.

“I think that the fact that he can’t be taken seriously benefits the character greatly. He’s a con man playing a caricature of a superhero,” a second person replied.

“I guess I thought villains were supposed to be somewhat intimidating, but it’s Marvel so it makes sense why they went that route,” another added.

5. Chris Hemsworth in Men In Black: International

One person said, “Chris Hemsworth, Men in Black: International, the film wasn’t necessary for one but I don’t think it was Hemsworth’s best work by any means.”

6. Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher

“Also Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher, the show got the casting pretty perfect but Tom Cruise wasn’t right for that role, also The Mummy again Tom Cruise wasn’t right for the role,” shared one person.

7. Winona Rider in Girl, Interrupted

For many, Winona Ryder delivers a compelling performance as Susanna Kaysen, a young woman struggling with mental illness in the 1960s. Ryder skillfully portrays the complexity of her character’s emotional journey, bringing depth and sensitivity to the role. However, some Redditors disagree.

“Winona Ryder in Girl, Interrupted. Everyone else in that film is SO good, except her, “ one person shared.

Then the second person replied in agreement, “I have to say, I agree!”

8. George Clooney in Batman

Someone shared, “George Clooney as Batman is probably the biggest one. Did a Batman marathon once and had to just turn off Clooney after 5 min. Love him in other movies and Oceans 11 is one of my all-time faves.”

9. Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter

When you hear Daniel Radcliffe, it’s only natural to associate his name with Harry Potter. While many people agree that he nailed the role, this Reddit user has another thing to say.

“This is something that my spouse and I talk about all of the time, but in my opinion, Daniel Radcliff as Harry Potter never seemed the right choice for me. I love the guy in other movies and he can turn on the acting when required… but… his portrayal of HP always felt forced and untrue to the character.”

10. Noomi Rapace in Prometheus

“Although I actually don’t like the film, I have to throw in my vote for Noomi Rapace in Prometheus,” somebody commented.
