No matter how hard we try, life has a way of throwing us off course. We can plan for an event weeks in advance and make multiple lists to double-check every detail before embarking—yet sometimes things just don’t work out the way we planned. If you’ve ever found yourself making excuses for why you couldn’t make it to an event, then you might be able to relate to some of this list curated by Redditors from around the globe—here are the top excuses people have come up with for missing events!

1. Something Came Up

One user commented on the thread and posted, “It’s situational. Have you already said you’d go? Is anyone depending on you?”

Another user replied, “I said I could, but I’m not in the mood anymore. No, no one depends on me.”

One user added, “‘I’m sorry, something came up, so I won’t be there. Have a great time, though!’ [or] ‘I’m feeling unwell, so that I won’t be there. Have a great time, though!’

Another user also responded, “Def not. That’s just straight-up self-absorbed and cowardly.”

“No, it isn’t. It’s etiquette appropriate. ‘I’m not in the mood anymore’ would be rude and possibly hurtful, and you don’t owe the general public details of your personal thoughts,” one Redditor answered.

One commenter asked,” Could you explain how saying that you’re not in the mood for an event is hurtful for someone? You’re talking about your feelings. That doesn’t say anything about someone else. I think it’s a valid statement to say you are not in the mood because you’re talking about yourself and not in any way negatively speaking about others. How can that be hurtful?”

Another user replied, “Not the person you asked, and I totally understand what you’re saying. If I am just talking about my feelings, it should not be hurtful to the other person. But I can see how it could be hurtful.

“If someone has already agreed to something, and then the day off is like I am not in the mood, it could come across to the other person that you don’t care about their time or their feelings or any effort they may have put into planning or the event itself.

“I know you’re only talking about your own feelings, but saying ‘I am not in the mood’ just kinda makes it feel like you decided on a whim with little regard for the person’s feelings. If you say, “, Sorry, I don’t feel good,” no one is gonna be like, “Man, I am mad. One of my friends blew me off when he felt sick.”

One user concluded, “It is called setting a boundary; if you don’t want to go, you literally don’t have to; if that upsets the other person, then everyone can fix it and move on (or not), but it’s not like the world would end if they didn’t attend.”

2. Returning Videotapes

One Redditor shared, “I have to return some videotapes.”

Another user replied, “Be kind. Rewind.”

“Have you been waiting eagerly to use this?” one commenter asked.

The OP responded, “Nope.”

3. I Have Diarrhea

One user commented, “I have diarrhea.”

Another user added, “Explosive Diarrhea.”

“That even Imodium can’t fix,” a user replied.

“When in doubt, s- your way out,” explained one user.

One user concluded, “Came here to say this. As a former restaurant manager, I am shocked at how rarely this was used because I’d allow it every time.”

4. My Pet Is Sick

One Redditor shared, “If you have a pet, tell them they’re sick or have health issues. Don’t go too far, like claiming the animal has cancer. My cat has urinary tract problems caused by crystals in the urine. I’ve had to take him to the vet, and he’s been prescribed medicated food.

“Aside from feeding him that food every day, I don’t need to do anything else! But I won’t stop me from telling people I need to keep watch over him because he’s had health issues the last few weeks.”

5. Mom Won’t Let Me

“Mom won’t let me,” one user posted.

Another one replied, “Used that one many times. That trumps anyone, anything, and any plan thrown at you. The bad thing is you can’t use it your whole life, but those few years you can use it are bittersweet.”

One Redditor commented, “Even if it doesn’t make sense, I still get away with it. I am a grown-up man living by myself..my mom lives far away, and my boss is asking if I can come to like group exercise projects. And I just said, I’m sorry, boss, my mom won’t let me..she says she needs me this weekend. And my boss is OK with it…”

6. I’m Dead

One Redditor posted, “I can’t come. I’m dead. always works.”

Another user replied, “I’ve actually used the ‘I’m Dead’ excuse to a bill collector that CALLED a few years back and got a letter sent to my house forgiving the debt from ‘my estate.’ It had to be someone not caring about the company or extremely stupid or the language barrier—if not all 3, lol.”

7. Just Don’t Want to Go

One user posted multiple excuse: “I don’t want to go. I already have plans, and I can’t reschedule again. I don’t know how to get there. I have nasty diarrhea.”

8. Just Plain No

One Redditor said, “Just plain No. Want to go to Joe’s after work? No. What about going to a ballgame on Saturday? No. If you give excuses, it gets messy because someone will try to counter your reasons. What to go to Joe’s after work? Nah, I’m beating. Well, we will just have one beer. Nah, I’m running low on cash. Hey, that’s OK, I’m buying. It’s simpler and easier just to say No. If you want it to sound more polite, you can say: No, but thanks for asking.”

9. Just Not Feeling It

One user unapologetically said, “I’m sorry, I’m just not feeling it today. I’ll be miserable if I come; not gonna put that on people. (gaslighting 101).”
