Another user shared, “The death that got me on my first viewing was Wade’s. I’m so used to action heroes shaking off worse injuries, but he just dies, even with the reassurance that he can probably just walk it off. When he started calling out for his mother, I had to pause the movie and collect myself.”

7. The Girl in Bridge to Terabithia

Another Redditor commented, “Bridge to Terabithia. I knew it came from reading the book, but it still hit hard. If temporary death counts, Baymax in Big Hero 6.”

One user replied, “I never read the book, and it seemed like a fun fantasy film, so it caught me off guard. I was just like, wait, what? Is she coming back? Was that real?

“And then I felt so bad for the boy because he finally connected with someone, and it was immediately taken away from him.”

8. Donny From The Big Lebowski

“‘Donny was a good bowler and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors … and bowling, and as a surfer, he explored the beaches of Southern California, from La Jolla to Leo Carrillo and … up to … Pismo. He died, like so many young men of his generation. He died before his time. In your wisdom, Lord, you took him, as you took so many bright flowering young men at Khe Sanh, Langdok, and Hill 364. These young men gave their lives. And so would Donny. Donny, who loved bowling. And so, Theodore Donald Karabotsos, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your final mortal remains to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean, which you loved so well. Good night, sweet prince,'” one user posted.

9. The Homeless Man in Groundhog Day

One user shared, “The homeless man in Groundhog Day is probably the most impactful movie death for me. There was nothing Phil could do to save him. He has to accept the man’s death. But he wouldn’t die alone. Over and over and over, Phil had to be there for the guy with a warm last meal, a little kindness, and some dignity in his final hours. I still think about it sometimes …

“‘Lay your little hand in mine…'”

10. Howard Hamlin in Better Call Saul

One Redditor posted, “Howard Hamlin in Better Call Saul.

“As soon as the candle flickered, I knew. And yet. Howard had his issues, but he didn’t deserve what Saul and Kim did. And no one deserves what Lalo did.”

Another user replied, “Season 1 starts with him as the apparent villain, the big corporate F- you to the downtrodden Jimmy, and then for like five seasons, I’m just like this Dude is great, understanding smart and eventually tries to help him so much. … I gotta rewatch it.”

11. Artax From The NeverEnding Story

“Atreyu! Noooo!!! (From The NeverEnding Story),” exclaimed one user.

Another user responded, “Did you mean Artax? Bc that s- wrecked me.”

Another user replied, “He may have been your father, but he wasn’t your daddy.”

13. Two Ewoks From Return of the Jedi

“As a kid, I cried in Return of the Jedi when the two Ewoks were running and fell after an explosion, and one got up and started shaking the other Ewok that didn’t wake up,” one user shared.

Another user replied, “I was a kid, and I fantasized about picking up the Ewok and taking it to an Ewok doctor and just the Ewok getting better. My mind couldn’t bear that poor Dude’s death.”

14. Hector in Troy

Another user posted, “Hector in Troy. He was a good man trying to stand by his brother and protect his country, and he was also a loving husband and father. He wasn’t involved in starting the war and did his best to fight it honourably. Knowing he would lose, he went into that fight with Achilles but still fought to the bitter end. Even if you didn’t know the story of The Iliad, after Hector’s death, you just know the Trojans are doomed.”

15. Boromir From The Lord of the Rings

“Maybe it makes me a basic b-, but … Boromir.

“What can I say? It has some pretty spectacular filmmaking in the way it was shot and edited, the audio with the music, it falls right at the climax of his redemption arc, and it takes three arrows to take him down … When someone asks me the most emotional death in a movie, my brain goes right to him,” one user said.

Another user quoted from the book, “‘The River had taken Boromir son of Denethor, and he was not seen again in Minas Tirith, standing as he used to stand upon the White Tower in the morning. But in Gondor in after-days, it long was said that the elven boat rode the falls and the foaming pool and bore him down through Osgiliath, and past the many mouths of Anduin, out into the Great Sea at night under the stars.'”

16 Rita in Dexter

One user shared, “I know it’s not a movie, but Rita in Dexter f- me up for weeks.”

Another Redditor added, “Dude, that was absolutely shocking. I only wish that more of the emerging ‘human’ in Dexter could have appeared. A tear or two, I mean.”

17. Jojo’s Mom in Jojo Rabbit

One user added to the thread, “Jojo’s mom in Jojo Rabbit. Just the shoes, get me every time.”

“I just watched that movie for the first time a few nights ago. At first, I was just like, ‘Well, s-, his mom’s dead, that blows. I liked her.’

“But when little Jojo tried tying her shoes after noticing they were undone but couldn’t, THAT broke me, like the total weight of it all just hit me all at once,” replied one user.

18. Brave Little Toaster

“Brave Little Toaster screwed me up for life. If you know, you know. How was that a … kid’s movie?” a user commented.

19. Bing Bong in Inside Out

One online user shared, “Bing Bong in Inside Out.” Another user replied, “Take her to the moon for me.”

“I have incurable stage 4 cancer at 40 years old. My youngest child is 2, and I’m scared I’m Bing Bong. My daughter, who needs me so much now, may not remember me. I wanted to be the one to take her to the moon.

“Unfortunately, Inside Out is one of my little girl’s favourites. So it wrecks me several times a week,” shared one user.

20. John Coffey From The Green Mile

Another user posted, “The Green Mile. Oh boy, that is the only piece of media that made me bawl like a child so bad that my face hurt.
