The way we look at things changes as we grow older. Some look at things with increased understanding, while others still look at things with more judgment and bitterness. It’s fascinating how our perspectives evolve, shaped by our experiences and values, and the wisdom we acquire over time.
From the innocence of childhood to the maturity of old age, how are you handling things as you age? Let us know in the comments!
1. A Lot Less Judgmental
One person said, “A lot less judgmental. Life will put you in situations you never thought you’d be in, and you never know who’s having the worst year of their life.”
2. Couldn’t Care Less About Others
Somebody stated, “I really have become much more of a ‘f- all of you people I hate you all’ sort of a person towards the human race.”
3. I Became the Opposite of Conservative
“Everyone told me I would get more conservative as I got older, but I have noticed the opposite happening,” said one.
“Agreed. My perspective has always leaned progressive, but I’ve become more dedicated to the cause in the past twenty years. At the same time, I’ve become more of a pragmatist because I’ve seen too many good ideas fail to become reality,” replied another.
“I’ve always heard the same thing but similarly have experienced the opposite. My ‘theory’ for why this is such a common notion is that in the past, getting older was almost synonymous with getting richer, but with the state of things for however long now that’s not how it is, and so it was never about conservatism coming with age but with wealth,” the third added.
4. More Selfish and Dishonest
One user commented, “I’ve gotten more selfish and dishonest. I used to give and give and give and I was always taken for granted. I’d tell the truth and always got f- for even the most minor mistakes. So now, f- it. I give less to strangers and I lie my a- off. If I’m going to get s- on, I’ll take the route that might save me some headache.”
5. The World Is Not Black and White; Everything Is Gray
Somebody mentioned, “I have realized that every generation is essentially the same, and wants the same things; and that there’s no such thing as black and white. Every issue is gray.”
6. Everyone Is Thinking About Themselves
“I realized that most everyone’s thinking about themselves. There’s rarely a good reason to feel worried about what people think. Also, I’m generally less fazed by things previously considered outrageous,” shared somebody.
7. Less of a People-Pleaser
As we grow older, we often realize that we cannot please everyone and that it’s not worth the effort to do so. So, just do the things that make you happy.
One Redditor stated, “I’ve become less of a people-pleaser and do what makes me happy instead.”
8. Not Worrying Too Much
Most of us grow up shy, but later on we realized opportunities will be wasted if we kept shying on.
“I was very shy when I was younger. I am still a bit shy but is considerably less, so much so that I am finally ready for my internship later this year. I learned to not worry about things to much,” shared somebody.
9. Views Have Changed
One person said, “I’ve gotten more libertarian on some economic issues, like rent control, free trade, excessive medical regulation, and zoning, and more progressive on others, such as lgbtq issues, reproductive rights, and w–d.”
