Many things terrify our household pets. The things that scare our pets most are always the silly and illogical ones. Here are ten ridiculous things that scare the cats and dogs in our lives.

1. Garbage Bags

“A garbage bag on the side of the road. I had to ‘pet' the bag so we could walk past it to go home.”

“For years, mine was afraid of when you fluff a plastic bag to put out in your garbage can. So, I would pick up a bag, and we would ‘fast walk' away … [to avoid it].”

According to most veterinarians, it is the noise that triggers our animals.

2. Bodily Functions

“My sister's dog was afraid of farts – even [its] own. Was hilarious!”

To be clear, it is natural.

3. Ceiling Fans

“My dog is terrified of ceiling fans. On or off, it doesn't matter. But, if she notices one, she has to check every few minutes to see if it's still there and scares herself all over again.”

“Same, but with my cat.”

4. Shadows

“My cat used to be afraid of its own shadow,” said one Redditor.

Show of hands: has anyone been spooked by their own shadow before?

5. Brooms/Mops

“My dog is scared of brooms. I know she was never abused. We got her as a tiny puppy. My dad's birds also hate brooms, though. It's [very] strange.”

Our hypothesis is that small animals are afraid of things sixteen times their size.

6. Christmas Decorations

“Inflatable reindeer Christmas decorations.”

But again—who wouldn't be spooked by a giant about ten times your own height, that's moving?

7. Balloons

Things that float are a significant source of stress for our pets.

“My birds are afraid of balloons, especially when the balloons fly. One is afraid of vacuums and brooms.”

8. Suitcases

“A suitcase my neighbor [set] at the end of their driveway.”

The belief of abandonment is apparent.

9. Wet Grass

“Wet grass. He won't step on it even if his life depends on it.”

Without shoes, I wouldn't step on the wet ground either.

10. Paper Bags

“My dog is scared of paper bags. He is 110 pounds and shouldn't be afraid of a bag.”
