While embarking on my daily scroll, I encountered the question, “What actor was miscast in a great movie?” So naturally, my first thought was Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. A character described as 6 feet 2 inches tall. Here are ten other examples where people felt an actor was miscast into an otherwise excellent film.

1. B.J. Novak in Inglourious Basterds

Someone started with, “B.J. Novak in Inglourious Basterds acts exactly like Ryan from The Office in a WWII movie because he’s a terrible actor. Great writer, though.” “Same as B.J. Novak in The Founder,” another agreed.

2. Jack Nicholson in The Shining

“Jack Nicholson is a fantastic actor, one of the greatest without question. However, the whole point of Stephen King’s novel was to show Jack fighting his demons, battling alcoholism, and the Overlook preying on his mind and eventually manipulating him.”

“In Stanley Kubrick’s film, Jack seemed off from the beginning. In the 1997 mini-series, Jack seemed like a guy honestly trying to get his life together and be a better father and husband. You see him actively fighting his urges and refusing the hotel’s influence during the movie,” another stated.

3. Jason Mamoa as Aquaman

“Jason Mamoa as Aquaman. He makes no sense to be in it. The villain looked like Aquaman. They should have had their roles reversed. Patrick Wilson would have done a fantastic job as Aquaman as he has short blonde hair that looks like the iconic one. Jason Mamoa should have just waited to be cast as Lobo. He would have suited THAT character,” another stated.

4. Russell Crowe in Les Misérables

“Russell Crowe was a terrible choice for Javert. Neither his voice nor his demeanor fit the Les Misérables antagonist. Replace him with someone like Alan Rickman; the movie would have been much better,” someone alleged. “R.I.P. Alan Rickman.”

5. Michael Cera in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

“Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim. Something wasn’t quite right about him in that role. The comics have Scott as more of a slacker/hipster who has misplaced confidence in himself, whereas Michael Cera played him as a shy nerd,” another suggested.

6. William Holden in The Bridge on the River Kwai

“William Holden in The Bridge on the River Kwai,” replied one. “It’s like he’s in a different movie from everyone else. I’ve always suspected that the studio wanted an action star to get people to see it. “Yeah,” another agreed. “Edit his scenes out, and it’s the same movie.”

7. Hugo Weaving in Lord of the Rings

“Unpopular opinion, but casting Agent Smith (The Matrix) as Elrond in Lord of the Rings was a BIG miss. It was jarring. He was the only recognizable actor in the movies,” stated one.

8. Kelly McGillis in Top Gun

“Kelly McGillis because she and Tom Cruise didn’t have good chemistry, and it felt like it should have been played by someone younger because their relationship felt out of place and weird to watch. She seemed so much bigger than him,” another person argued.

9. Barbra Streisand in Hello Dolly

“Barbra Streisand in Hello Dolly. She was too young and changed from a classic character into a roadshow Mae West. The movie stopped in the second act because she wanted another solo in the film,” someone implied.

10. Ray Stevenson in Kill the Irishman

Finally, someone declared, “I always thought the film Kill the Irishman could have been so much better with a more appropriate cast. Mainly Ray Stevenson was weak. It has the makings of a great movie but falls short due to cast.”
