Some movies are predictable: you can reassure yourself the whole way through that they’ll end up together, or nobody’s going to die… But some movies don’t follow those familiar plots. Some like to begin normally, and throw in a major plot twist at the end. So if you’re looking for some quality and unpredictable entertainment, here are 12 good movies that went an entirely different way than viewers expected!

1. Barbarian

3. Whiplash

4. Bones and All

“Bones and all. It was WAY scarier to me than I expected. I didn’t think it’d get so unsettling. Like… this movie had an insane impact on me. It made me feel sick, I felt dizzy after leaving the cinema, and I was scared of the dark for like 4 nights after I watched it. Idk what that was about. It’s not even a horror movie in that sense,” said one Reddit user.

5. The Last Jedi

One person said, “The Last Jedi. I didn’t have high expectations, but it was the only star wars movie where my initial reaction was that I hated it.”

Someone replied, “It’s the only one of those three movies I thought actually felt like a decent movie, not just more new Star Wars vomit.”

6. The Perfection

The Perfection is a psychological horror film released in 2018. Directed by Richard Shepard, the movie revolves around two talented cellists, Charlotte and Lizzie, played by Allison Williams and Logan Browning, respectively.

One person said, “I don’t think you could ever expect that ending.”

7. Better Watch Out

Better Watch Out is a Christmas-themed horror-comedy film released in 2016. Directed by Chris Peckover, the movie follows a babysitter named Ashley, played by Olivia DeJonge, as she looks after a 12-year-old boy named Luke, portrayed by Levi Miller. 

The story takes place on a quiet suburban street, where Ashley arrives at Luke’s house to babysit him for the evening. However, their peaceful night takes a dark turn when a series of disturbing events occur. Mysterious intruders start terrorizing the house, and Ashley must protect herself and Luke from the unknown threat.

8. The Cabin in the Woods

The Cabin in the Woods is a 2012 horror film directed by Drew Goddard and co-written by Goddard and Joss Whedon. The story follows a group of five college friends who decide to spend a weekend at a remote cabin in the woods. As they settle into the cabin, strange and sinister events begin to unfold. They encounter mysterious objects and artifacts and soon realize that they are being manipulated by a group of technicians working in an underground facility.

9. From Dusk Til Dawn

10. Parasite

“Parasite is my gold standard,” one person stated. Parasite is a critically acclaimed South Korean film directed by Bong Joon-ho, released in 2019. It made history by becoming the first Korean film to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. It later went on to win multiple prestigious awards, including four Academy Awards. The film tells the story of two families from different social classes. The Kim family, who live in a cramped basement apartment and struggle to make ends meet, comes across an opportunity to infiltrate the wealthy Park family’s lives. Through clever manipulation and deception, the Kim family members secure jobs as tutors and housekeepers for the Parks.

11. One Cut of the Dead

One Cut of the Dead is a Japanese horror-comedy film directed by Shinichiro Ueda, released in 2017. The film gained significant acclaim for its unique approach to the zombie genre and its clever storytelling technique. The story revolves around a low-budget film crew shooting a zombie movie in an abandoned water filtration plant. However, as they start filming, real zombies suddenly appear, and chaos ensues. The crew members find themselves caught in the midst of an actual zombie outbreak, and they must fight for their lives while trying to finish the film.

12. Hot Fuzz

Hot Fuzz is a British action-comedy film released in 2007, directed by Edgar Wright and written by Wright and Simon Pegg. The movie is the second installment of the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, following “Shaun of the Dead” and preceding “The World’s End.”
